A compansion-type noise reduction originally designed for use with LP records. By careful consideration of psychoacoustic phenomena, it was designed to be "compatible", meaning that the encoded record could be played without the decoder. Using the decoder, the dynamic range of the record was increased by 20dB. The decoder was designed using only analog signal processing, which allowed the development of an extremely inexpensive single-chip decoder for use in OEM equipment.
CX was adopted for use in the LaserDisc system, and has been in continuous use for 20 years in that application.
