Merlin instrument (lock-in amp, plus more) for instrument product line
The Merlin instrument represents a concept to product development.
The customer requested the design and development of a product to be
added to their instrument line. This instrument was to be capable of
very low noise voltage measurements, in particular for detectors.
Operation was to include voltage measurements synchronized to a
light-chopper wheel driven by the Merlin instrument, and capable of
chopping frequencies of 10 to 1000 Hz.
Only the sine wave fundamental
was to be extracted from this chopped signal. Requirements also
included a front panel interface using a graphics LCD display and
user interactions through menu selections on this display.
Simultaneous measurement of a reference channel provided signal
normalization by ratio. Seamless dynamic range was from tens of
nanovolts to 5 volts RMS. Accessories included additional signal
channels and communications capabilities such as serial RS 232 and
GPIB. The technologies used covered a broad range of analog, motor
speed control, digital signal processing, packaging such as circuit
boards and housing. We developed the entire instrument and delivered a complete package
so that the customer simply had to manufacture and sell it.
